Profitting in Price Declines

Postby cryptocrooks » Wed Jan 14, 2015 3:32 am

Today, I have setup a bot on BTC-E. I just learned today they do not require verification so I created an account immediately and deposited funds. At the time of writing, 1 bitcoin is 220 USD.

As I was setting up a MACDHistogram I thought it would be able to take advantage of the peaks, but ultimately I decided on a Stochastic Oscillator for the current environment. I changed the buy signal at 20, and the sell signal at 45. Adjusting it by trial and error, adjusting for correct buy/sell with selling before drops, and buying at their bottoms.

After backtesting several times within the indicator, it seemed like 5 minute interval was the best way. I hope to wake up tomorrow and see some successful trades, since I was not able to issue trades on CEX for unknown reasons.

Anyone else have any ideas on how to trade bitcoin in this environment?

I have switched to a Percentage Price Oscillator (PPO) with half the default settings and it seems to be trading well.
Although, it hasn't traded in a couple hours because of my insurance "never sell less than bought price". I checked the log and this stopped it from making several complete buy + sell orders.

Is there any safeties I should add that would help sell during price drops, and price when price goes up (significantly in both cases).I'm starting to understand the indicators better, but the insurances and safeties are two thirds of the bot!

Anyone have ideas or want to share their own experience with this turbulent environment?

I am now using a StochasticRSI because bitcoin's price has stabilized a bit. Please post your success or failure with the bot during this tumultuous time!
